TriMet Offers Safe and Healthy Transportation Options for Portland Residents

TriMet provides bus, light rail and commuter rail service in the Portland, OR, metro area. The transportation provider’s options connect people with their community while easing traffic congestion and reducing air pollution. With more than one million people expected in the region by 2035, transit plays an important role in maintaining the quality of life for residents in the Portland area. Along with extensive bus transit and streetcar transit, TriMet offers 52 miles of light rail track, featuring 127 cars for five color-coded lines. As part of a recent renovation of 22 light rail cars, officials at TriMet chose to replace the existing flooring in the vehicles, because it was difficult to install and maintain, and it wore quickly. Advised by engineers at the Siemens railcar production team, TriMet decided to install norament^® grano in the renovated cars, citing the product’s durability, maintenance and the safety it offers passengers. Logos and other indicators like wheelchairs and bicycles are inlaid into the floor, along with strips for the visually impaired and other cues to help ensure the safety and surefootedness of passengers. This approach is far superior to decals or stencils used on past projects. Every night the railcars are swept and damp mopped, never requiring application of any finish products. Once a month they are detailed to ensure that they are attractive, healthy and safe for passengers.
