nora flooring selected for patient safety learning lab at Clemson University

Lab uses evidence-based design to create a safer, more ergonomic operating room

Salem, NH (Feb. 21, 2018) – nora systems, Inc., a manufacturer of premium rubber flooring, was selected to participate in a collaborative research project with the Center for Health Facilities Design and Testing with Clemson University and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC).

The project, titled “Realizing Improved Patient Care through Human-Centered Design in the Operating Room” (RIPCHD.OR), was made possible through a four-year grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).

The Center for Health Facilities Design & Testing, MUSC (Medical University of South Carolina) and Clemson School of Architecture and Health Design graduate students developed a Patient Safety Learning Lab (PSLL) that uses a multi-disciplinary, human-centered approach to incorporate evidence-based design, human factors and system engineering principles to design a safer, more ergonomic operating room.

norament® xp flooring was selected for use in the RIPCHD.OR PSLL as the most effective resilient flooring solution to support both patient safety and staff safety outcomes in the OR.

“We chose nora flooring for this project because nora’s premium rubber flooring is ideal for the operating room environment,” said Anjali Joseph, Ph.D, EDAC, Endowed Chair in Architecture and Health Design and Director, Center for Health Facilities Design and Testing, Clemson University. “nora premium rubber flooring is easy to clean and maintain in a high traffic, high spill areas such as the OR in addition to being durable and slip resistant. Additionally, nora’s commitment to supporting research endeavors such as RIPCHD.OR made the company a perfect collaborator and partner for our project.”

Flooring plays a significant role in the OR as a functional element for infection control, ergonomics, acoustics, maintainability and room turn-over time. nora flooring has an extremely dense, closed surface that is inherently dirt-repellent, dimensionally-stable and free of pesticides or chemicals. nora’s flush surface minimizes contamination, reduces bacterial load and is inherently antimicrobial.

“As and edac Advocate Firm with The Center for Health Design, nora is proud to be part of the RIPCHD.OR project to support evidence-based and human-centered design research in the OR,” shared Sandra Soraci, EDAC, LEED AP, NCIDQ, Marketing Leader, Health Care Solutions with nora systems, Inc.
