MOL Campus: A sustainable energy concept for a sustainable corporate vision

The MOL Campus: an iconic landmark of modern Budapest in the making

Like many enterprises, the Hungarian oil and gas company MOL is preparing itself for a low-carbon circular economy by initiating a sustainable transformation process. As part of this project, star architects Foster & Partners designed a new headquarters for MOL by the Danube, just south of central Budapest, in 2022. At 143 metres, this 28-storey tower is one of the highest buildings in Hungary and the tallest in Budapest. The building had to fulfil both the functional criteria and the sustainability standards required by the company. The heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system is powered entirely by renewable energies and includes both photovoltaic and geothermal systems.

The building measures 86,000 m2 and houses 2,500 employees. On the lower floors, there are restaurants, a conference room and a comprehensive range of facilities, while on the upper floors, there are flexible office spaces for modern working. The interplay of working spaces and greenery from the atrium to the top of the tower connects both the different storeys and the people within to create an inspiring, relaxing atmosphere. The architects’ vision is to bring those who work on the MOL Campus into harmony with both the natural world and their urban environment. MOL is active in 30 countries worldwide and has won sustainability prizes for corporate responsibility, sustainability and corporate governance.

A floor to meet any requirement

Around 33,000 square metres of noraplan signa rolls were laid throughout the building. “The rubber flooring combines an attractive appearance and optimum functional properties to create the perfect fit for this sustainable modern ambience”, says Nikolett Komondi, Sustainability Ambassador of Interface and Sales Manager at ProInterier Ltd. which is the exclusive distributor of nora products in Hungary. “When we talk about the MOL Campus, the easy maintenance and the carbon neutrality are the most important factors behind the choice of the nora products. Also, thanks to their dense surface, nora rubber floor coverings are extremely hard-wearing and can easily withstand long-term heavy-duty use. The rubber flooring significantly reduces the sound of footfall, which improves the room acoustics and lowers the general level of noise throughout the entire building”, she adds. nora floor coverings also fulfil a range of hygiene criteria: the dense, non-porous rubber surface gives bacteria little chance to multiply and makes cleaning and maintenance a simple task. The combination of low maintenance costs and durability have a positive effect on life cycle costs. nora floorings’ excellent anti-slip properties provide yet another advantage for office spaces.

Choosing flooring in accordance with strict environmental standards

Shortly after its official opening MOL Campus has successfully achieved the BREEAM Excellent rating and the LEED Platinum certification. Like the entire nora flooring portfolio, noraplan signa floor coverings are CO2-neutral over their entire product life cycle. As such, they made an important contribution to achieving these targets. To reduce its CO2-footprint, nora follows the German Federal Environment Agency’s recommended three-point plan of avoidance, reduction and, lastly, compensation of any remaining emissions through emission reduction certificates. Customers who select nora flooring can choose to receive a certificate confirming that the floor coverings supplied for the building are carbon-neutral over their entire product life cycle. This certification helps them to achieve their climate goals.
