Médiathèque Julien Gracq

Warm, welcoming and harmonious

Louis Poirier, alias Julien Gracq, is one of the most important French writers of the 20th century. As well as publishing numerous essays and novels, he taught geography and history at various French secondary schools. In 2019, a media centre was dedicated to his memory. The Médiathèque Julien Gracq is located in the centre of the Breton town of Pont-l’Abbé in the west of France.

The local council envisaged the centre as being open to everyone, a space where people can discover literature, relax and feel at home. The architects responsible, Studio Riopel, managed to realize this by creating an inviting interior. Floor coverings and carpeting by Interface played a key role in achieving this. Studio Riopel decided on a combination of light grey noraplan® uni rubber floor coverings and Interface Human Nature carpet in green. The juxtaposition of these different materials creates a harmonious design that reinforces the attractive aesthetic and gives the room a friendly feel. The products also offer functional advantages due to their good acoustic and ergonomic properties.

A relaxing, modern atmosphere

Measuring almost 500 m2, the new media centre offers the perfect environment for sitting back with a book. There is an area for young persons, an activities room and an area for working, relaxing or playing on the consoles installed. There is also a cafeteria where visitors can unwind. Modern furnishings and the light grey rubber flooring convey a friendly, open atmosphere. The monochrome aesthetic of the noraplan floor covering has a calming effect on the space and skilfully accentuates the colourful elements of the interior. The light grey flooring highlights the green island of Human Nature carpeting, which adds a natural element to the centre and creates a comfortable atmosphere. The warm rubber flooring and soft carpet are also suitable for sitting on, making them the perfect surface for children.

Non-hazardous materials for healthy indoor air

Indoor air quality was another important criteria for the decision-makers at the media centre. nora floor coverings contain no harmful phthalate plasticisers or halogens. In 2006, our floors were the first resilient floor coverings ever to be awarded the German Federal Government’s Blue Angel eco label. noraplan uni also has Indoor Air Comfort Gold certification and Greenguard Gold certification for excellent indoor air quality.

In conclusion, it can be said that the combination of nora rubber floor coverings and textile floor coverings from Interface has proved a success in practice and generates a pleasant atmosphere.
