Clean, safe, economical: nora pads are perfect for clinics

In times of tight budgets in the healthcare sector, cleaning hospitals and retirement homes needs to be hygienic, efficient and cost-effective. On the one hand, stringent standards have to be observed to reduce the risk of infections, while on the other clean and well-maintained surroundings are crucial for the well-being of patients, staff and visitors.

The condition of its floors has a major impact on the appearance of a hospital since they serve, as it were, as its “calling card”. That is why the Asklepios Paulinen Klinik in Wiesbaden has been relying for many years on the ecologically sound and durable rubber floor coverings from nora systems and, since more recently, on an innovative cleaning system: nora pads – cleaning discs impregnated with tiny diamonds. Using nora pads minimises the need for cleaning chemicals. more

Test in the Asklepios Paulinen Klinik

Founded in 1856 as the Paulinenstiftung foundation by Duchess Pauline and transformed into a hospital in 1896, the Asklepios Paulinen Klinik in Wiesbaden with its 361 beds and 15 places in the day clinic is today a modern hospital offering basic and regular care, as well as being a specialised hospital of oncology. Embedded in an association of more than 90 Asklepios clinics at 70 German locations, it belongs to one of Germany’s largest chains of private hospitals.

“Floors from nora systems have been installed in many areas of our hospital for decades, and we’ve had positive experiences with them,” reports the Technical Director of the Paulinen Klinik, Franz Josef Gläßer. The extremely hard-wearing rubber floor coverings with their dense, closed surface are ideal for healthcare facilities: Easy to clean, they are resistant to surface disinfectants and stains. “That’s why we’re also planning to gradually replace other resilient floor coverings with rubber flooring as part of our pending renovation measures.”

Responsible for the cleaning at the Paulinen Klinik is Asklepios Service GmbH, which also belongs to the Group. Facility manager Julian Hacker and his team of over 50 cleaners ensure that high cleaning and hygiene standards are observed in the busy hospital. Following the introduction of an innovative cleaning system with nora diamond pads from the Weinheim-based rubber manufacturer, the hospital expressed an interest in testing the new method. The gynaecological optional service ward was chosen for the trials.

The noraplan signa rubber floor covering in light beige interspersed with colourful striped inlays was installed here.

Extremely satisfied with the cleaning results

“We’ve been using nora pads to clean this ward for one and a half years now and we are exceptionally satisfied with the results in all regards,” emphasises the regional director of Asklepios Klinik GmbH responsible for the Paulinen Klinik, Ralf Wendler. He says the pads offer several advantages. One of the most important of these is that they obviate the need for the basic cleaning of the floors using aggressive chemicals that was previously necessary. This not only saves time and costs, but is also good for the environment and the welfare of patients and staff.

“Regular basic cleaning used to be absolutely essential to get satisfactory cleaning results,” says the regional director. “This meant that the patients’ rooms had to be empty for up to five hours because the cleaning agent we were using had a pH value of 10-12 and a penetrating odour. The floor also took a long time to dry.” With nora pads this basic cleaning is no longer necessary, and all that is required is simple routine cleaning using water mixed with a neutral cleaner. “Not only do we save ourselves a time-consuming cleaning process, but we need much less chemicals as well,” Wendler is delighted to say. “Using the diamond pads enables us to do the cleaning while the patient is still in the room.” From an economic point of view, the use of nora pads is therefore extremely beneficial to the hospital.

Easy and efficient to use

“The nora Pad 1 is used for daily cleaning,” explains facility manager Hacker. “Around every four to five weeks, more comprehensive intensive cleaning takes place using the nora Pad 2.” Most types of commercially available cleaning machines can be fitted with nora pads. As well as daily care, they are also suitable for repairing the floor coverings. Severe soiling or damage to the surfaces, such as can sometimes be caused in hospital corridors by the castors on patients’ beds or heavy food trolleys, can be refurbished using Pad 3.

In addition, the diamond pads allow operators to choose between a matt or a gloss finish with an optional polishing process.

The fact that both Asklepios Service GmbH and the technical management at Wiesbaden‘s Paulinen Klinik are extremely satisfied with nora pads led to this innovative cleaning system being presented as an example of best practice at a national meeting of regional directors, and it is now also being phased in at other Asklepios clinics including those in Langen, Bad Abbach and St. Augustine.
