Children Walk the “Streets” in Unique Child Development Center

When it’s lunchtime, children at the recently completed Chickasaw Nation Child Development Center in Ada, OK, walk to the Hip Hop Diner on Chokfi (Bunny) Blvd. After lunch, they might visit the amusement park or the zoo on Hosolo (Snail) Street before crossing London Bridge on their way to the Movie Theater, Piggy Bank & Trust or Curly Locks Barber Shop.

In fact, every destination in the 26,700-square-foot child development center, including classrooms, restrooms, play areas, offices and the infirmary, is modeled after a familiar building, such as a fire station, post office, flower shop or candy store. Hallways bear street names and walls are decorated with murals that depict popular nursery rhymes, including “Jack and Jill,” “Little Miss Muffet” and “The Old Woman who Lived in a Shoe.”

“As we thought about plans for the center, our goal was to create a community, using familiar buildings, Chickasaw street names, soft street lamps and windows with colorful awnings where children could look out from their classroom “homes” into the “streets,” said Lisa John, administrator of the division of education for Chickasaw Nation.

The classrooms where up to 220 children from six weeks to four years of age gather each day feature colors selected according to their age—pastels for the very young and brighter colors for older children.

“The floors in each room feature the same field color and border,” said Tammy Whitaker, Chickasaw Nation project coordinator. “This consistency ties the building together. But within each classroom, four accent colors unique to that space brighten the floors and are repeated on walls, cabinets and shelving.”

In fact, it was the combined color palettes of noraplan logic and noraplan environcare™—64 colors in all—that first attracted Whitaker to the nora rubber floor covering. The finished center includes 13 colors of nora flooring in 17 classrooms and two large indoor play areas.

“nora offers patterns that are attractive, but not overwhelming, and a great selection of colors that are vibrant, but not so bright that they are all-consuming,” said Whitaker.

nora flooring delivered additional performance benefits that were just as important to Whitaker and John.

“We wanted a quality product that would be durable,” said John. “A floor covering that could stand up to all the children who use the facility and continue to look nice day after day, eliminating the need for frequent replacement.”

“At the same time, the flooring needed to help us meet sanitation standards—a surface that would not harbor germs and would be easy to maintain,” she continued.

nora rubber flooring is naturally bacteriostatic, helping to inhibit the growth and reproduction of harmful microorganisms. In addition, stain-resistant, rubber flooring from nora requires low maintenance, no waxing and reduces lifetime maintenance costs—all important to John, Whitaker and the staff at the child development center.

“This is a large facility,” said John. “Our housekeepers would never have the time to wax and buff all the floors, so the no-wax, easy-to-maintain features of the nora floor are a real plus for us. Also, because we’re not using wax and strippers, we’re able to minimize the amount of harsh chemicals stored in the building – a benefit to our children and to the environment.”

“Children also appreciate the comfort that characterizes rubber flooring,” added Whitaker. “They tend to spend a lot of time on the floor, so we wanted the resiliency that rubber flooring offers. It not only looks nice, but it feels good.”

According to Whitaker, the brightly patterned floors also help inspire children’s imagination as they discover colorful classrooms behind the doors of such popular attractions as the Three Little Pigs’ homes, the Jack Sprat Toy Company, the Three Blind Mice Book Store and Fun Town Police, Fire and Train Stations.

“It truly is a one-of-a-kind facility that excites the children who come here,” added John. “Parents know their children are in a safe, nurturing environment, and visitors are just amazed by what they see.”
