Grammar School Lucas-Cranach-Gymnasium, Wittenberg

Today's grammar school ‘Lucas-Cranach-Gymnasium’ in Wittenberg has existed since 1991. At that time, the Goethe school and the Lucas Cranach secondary school united. Both schools have a long tradition and past reaching back to the 1920s. This tradition and past are reflected in the buildings. Since the two schools united, several renovation and modernisation work has already been done.

In the summer of 2009, the construction work in the assembly hall, which his located in Building II of the Lucas-Cranach-Gymnasium, started. The formerly dull assembly hall was transformed into a representative room using a fancy floor design and an excellent light concept. The impressive room inlay covering almost 300 square metres made of the rubber floor covering norament® 925 grano consists of 1,912 individual elements. These elements were accurately cut to size in three different dimensions and seven colours in the inlay centre of nora systems GmbH in Weinheim.

The floor design is based on the coat of arms of the Lucas Cranach family – one of the most important painters and graphic artists of the German renaissance – after whom the school was named. He was presented the “winged snake” by the Elector Frederick the Wise in 1508, which then became the signet on many of his works. Since the autumn of 2009, the history-charged “winged snake” has now been preserved in the rubber floor covering of the Lucas-Cranach-Gymnasium.
