Devastating fire in Stade Municipal Library
nora® floorcoverings stand up to flames
Following a major fire early this year, the Municipal Library in Stade/Northern Germany was a distressing sight not only for bibliophiles. The fire destroyed a large part of the books and media in stock, and rendered the listed building uninhabitable, from the basement to the attic. Supporting constructions for the roof were largely destroyed; beams and walls suffered extensive fire damage. But the noraplan® rubber floorcoverings from Freudenberg Bausysteme KG remained almost unharmed.
This fire underlines what it means to have the nora® rubber floorings classified in Group B1 of flame-retardant building materials as defined in DIN 4102. No melting or burns were found on the noraplan® plus floorings, confirmed Stade's Fire Safety Officer.
The risk posed by conflagration gases is frequently underestimated. Most fire-related injuries are caused by inhaling toxic gases released when building materials, furniture and fixtures catch fire. nora® floorcoverings do not contain any PVC or halogens. In the event of a fire, no dangerous hydrogen-chloride gases, dioxins or furans will be released.
