Solida production of Berlin-Chemie AG
Research, develop, and produce on safe ground

Berlin-Chemie AG develops, produces, and markets pharmaceutical products. The company had the new building for the production and packaging of tablets, capsules, and coated tablets equipped with a floorcovering made of rubber. This floorcovering meets the hygienic demands for the production of pharmaceuticals, resists permanently the extreme loads of industrial trucks and gives the rooms a pleasant atmosphere to work in.

Analgesics, antirheumatics, thyroid therapeutics, antidiabetics, gastrointestinal therapeutics as well as cardiovascular and metabolic therapeutics - Berlin-Chemie AG offers a broad range of drugs. This range is regularly extended by continuous research and development. This in turn requires an - also continuous - modernisation and extension of the laboratory and production space. For this reason, the pharmaceutical company, which has been located in Berlin-Adlershof since its foundation in 1890, asked the architect's office of Prof. Walter A. Noebel at the end of the 1990s to prepare a master plan for the further development of the company premises. The Berlin architect's office decided to design a modular pharmaceutical plant to be able to flexibly respond any time to any required new buildings or extensions.

On the basis of this master plan and relating to the required capacities, Berlin-Chemie AG at first built a new plant for the production of infusion solutions which was commissioned in mid-2000. Already one year later, the new production of oral liquid agents was started and in April 2003 the new Solida production including further packaging facilities and spaces for logistics were inaugurated. This new building directly attaches to the Liquida plant and also consists of a two-storied head as well as a single-storied hall component. The head construction accommodates on the ground floor the laboratory and office rooms, workshops, and building services rooms as well as the lounges, locker rooms and sanitary rooms on the upper floor. From a visitors' room on the ground floor, the hall unit can be seen where the architects housed the incoming goods department and the supply logistics as well as the production of tablets, capsules, and coated tablets.

Functionality and aesthetics meet

When planning the interior design, the architects were confronted with the challenge to find a floorcovering for the hall unit which on the one hand creates a positive working environment and on the other hand is suitable for the rather different requirements of use. In the controlled areas of the production, it has to meet the high hygienic demands of a pharmaceuticals production, ensure electrostatic dissipation for production safety and at the same time resist the extremely high point loads produced by industrial trucks (5 Newton per square millimetre wheel load). The architects also intended to make the different functions visible through the design of the floor. In agreement with the principal, they thus decided to use the rubber floorcovering nora which combines in an ideal way functionality and aesthetics. The collection of Freudenberg Bausysteme KG , which for more than 50 years has been dealing with the material rubber and its material-specific properties, comprises approximately 260 different colours and numerous types of surfaces.

The rubber floorcoverings produced by the Weinheim company resist even extreme loads and offer a high walking comfort thanks to their resilience. nora floorcoverings have an extremely long life and are extraordinarily durable. They can be easily and economically cleaned, can be decontaminated, and must not be coated because of their sealed surface. The resilient floorcovering meets the demands of international regulations and guidelines made on floorcoverings in laboratories and is resistant to short-time exposure to solvents, diluted acids, alkalis, oils, and greases. The floorcoverings are also foot-warm and have anti-slip properties, are classified as flame-retardant according to DIN 4102, part 1, and equivalent international standards, and do not contain any PVC and halogens. In case of fire, no hydrochloric gas is released which might lead to caustic burns of the respiratory tract and might form hydrochloric acid in combination with fire fighting water.

nora rubber floorcoverings are in principal anti-static and possess a very low tendency to charge. For areas where a special protection is required, the floorcoverings may also be equipped with additional properties. Thus, the floorcovering noraplan plus al was installed in the production hall and the laboratories of the Solida building. This is an electrostatically dissipative grade which was installed in a conductive version including copper bands. The unstructured surface has a contrast-rich, multi-coloured granular design and makes the different functions visible in the building of Berlin-Chemie AG in a friendly bright blue and a warm reddish shade.

The principal and the architect had also installed rubber floorcoverings of Freudenberg Bausysteme KG in the entrance area and the corridors. Here, however, they decided to use norament 925, an anthracite-coloured floorcovering with slate structure which creates the link between exclusivity and industrial expedience in the areas accessible to the public.

In order to include both staircases into the design concept and at the same time to equip them with a wear-resistant floorcovering, norament stairtreads were used here. These also consist of high-quality rubber, are extraordinarily wear-resistant, offer a long life, are highly footfall sound absorbent, easy to clean, and flame-retardant. They are installed with the special dry adhesive SIFLOOR Goman® 240. The self-adhesive, solvent-free roll-type installation tape is odourless and - like norament stairtreads and nora floorcoverings - does not contain any plasticizers, solvents, or chlorine. Dry bonding is suitable both for new buildings and rehabilitation and allows for an installation of the stairtreads up to 5 times as quick. Further advantages are that the stairs can be walked on despite the installation being performed and do not have to be closed.

The new building for the Solida production has a total storey area of approx. 5,800sqm. Approx. 3,960sqm were equipped with the nora rubber floorcoverings; approx. 3,600sqm of these were installed in an electrically conductive way. Thanks to the positive properties, the easy cleaning and the low maintenance costs, of these floorcoverings, the tradition-steeped Berlin-Chemie AG will continue to be able to focus on safe ground on the continuous research and development of new drugs in future.
