Fans and players stand on nora rubber floorings
Football stars in the Kosmos Allianz Arena

The third-level gallery of the Allianz Arena in Munich houses Brand World, a mall with shops and restaurants, inviting passers-by to stroll around and browse. The outstanding highlight is the megastore of FC Bayern Munich with the "Walk of Fame", which features nora rubber floorings.

The "Walk of Fame" extends from the entrance to the checkouts and will, rather like Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, gradually be filled up with the names of FC Bayern's most successful footballers. It consists of twelve large black circles, inlaid into the flooring. These circles are 180 cm in diameter and contain three smaller circles, with one in each case incorporating a star, in which the names of Bavarian footballers are engraved. The circles and stars are outlined by stainless steel rails, which are incorporated in the flooring flush with the surface. "When it came to the flooring we opted for rubber, because this material is very hard-wearing," explains Wolfgang Gruschwitz, Managing Director of the Munich-based architects Gruschwitz GmbH. The floor has been laid with norament 986 metro, a flooring with a newly developed design. "This coarse-pored surface possesses a pleasant structure, very good for use on such a large area." The realisation of the complete concept was assigned to shopfitter Schlegel-Ladenbau, Bietigheim-Bissingen.

Near the megastore of FC Bayern Munich is the Allianz Shop, whose design is based on the idea of creating a link between the firm's corporate image and the passion of a football fan, a mixture of functionality and emotive authenticity. The principal eye-catcher is the white-coloured information and sales counter. Along the walls and the supporting columns, visitors will find merchandising articles, such as T-shirts, pins, bags and footballs. The room is surrounded by white walls, angled at 10°, and featuring illuminated blue LEDs. The ambiance is underlined by the blue nora rubber flooring. This permanently resilient flooring is exceptionally hard-wearing, and has repeatedly proved in actual use that it can stand up to even the toughest of traffic. For designing the Allianz Shop, the architects and the client opted for the plain flooring noraplan uni.

Hard-wearing, anti-slip flooring for the players' area

Hard-wearing durability is crucial, too, when it comes to selecting the floorings for the players' changing and preparation areas. The changing room is highly functional in its décor, but nonetheless radiates a welcoming yet also exciting atmosphere. This has been achieved by a colour concept featuring white walls, Bavarian-red lockers and the anthracite-coloured flooring. Here, too, the rubber floorings from Freudenberg Bausysteme KG were used, since this material stands up well to the extremely tough usage it gets from the spikes of the football boots, and with its easy-care qualities ensures inexpensive cleaning. For the changing room and the massage area, the architects Herzog & de Meuron, Zürich, and FC Bayern Munich chose the pastille-type flooring norament 925 in dark gray and for the route through the tunnel to the playing field they selected norament 925 in a light, friendly natural hue. The stairs, too, were incorporated in the overall concept, by using norament stairtreads, here combined with a safety strip.

However, it's not just its resistance to football boots that makes the rubber flooring so well suited for the players' area at the Allianz Arena. It is also warm to the feet, permanently resilient, and anti-slip (R 9, and in some cases R 10 classification under DIN 51 130), thus offering its users a high degree of walking comfort in conjunction with good slip-resistant properties. In terms of built-in fire protection, too, it was an obvious choice, since nora floorcoverings have been classified as flame-retardant in conformity with DIN 4102, Part 1 and equivalent international standards, and do not contain any PVC or halogens. So in the event of a fire they do not release any hydrogen chloride gas, which may cause acid burns in the respiratory passages and in conjunction with extinguishing water will form hydrochloric acid.
