norament® stairtreads for stairs with straight steps and angled edges
The norament® stairtread is stair nosing, tread and riser in one piece. It is used exclusively in indoor applications, and fixed with nora® Stepfix or contact adhesive (after prior consultation with the adhesive manufacturers concerned).
The vertical stair nosing section (nosing) is manufactured in an angle of approx. 80°.
This is why more strongly undercut steps cannot be covered. As a string casing for right-angled steps, step angles for wall and banister sides are offered.

First the stair angles are cut to size using the profile cutter,
see under nora® special tools.
To do this, they are placed on top of each other and fitted to
the step, and then cut all together.

After that, they can be glued together indissolubly with fast-setting
adhesive.
The rod profiles (stringers), all of which have the same cross-section, form the continuation at the
open landing edge.
After that, cut the stair nosing to size, and fix it.
Installation of norament® stairtreads
The subfloor
The front edge of the step has to be straight and match the
shape of the profile. Rounded or wavy edges prevent full
adhesion of the stairtread at the edge - the area which is
subjected to maximum stress. The springiness of the edges
at this point may cause damage to the adhesion and the
stairtread itself.
Broken-off or non-right-angled edges have to be straightened
with repair angles, and levelled. Commercially available levelling
compounds or smoothing compounds are used for levelling.
Dusty and porous subfloors are primed.
The pre-treatment of the subfloor (e.g. grinding, brushing
with steel brushes, pre-coating, levelling out etc.) and the
tests (e.g. hardness, dryness, flatness etc.) follow the technical
regulations of VOB, Part C, DIN 18 365 "Floorcovering work"
and the recommendations of the manufacturers of the precoatings,
fillers, and adhesives.
At the time of installation and adhesive bonding, the
subfloor temperature must be not less than 15 °C.
For installation, the norament® stairtread must have subfloor
temperature. In winter, the stairtread has thus to be stored for
some days at installation temperature.
Installation and fixing
Installation of the norament® stairtread begins with the lowest step. For this purpose, the riser part of the stairtread is cut off and adapted to the riser of the lowest step, fixed, and cut off even with the edge of the step.
The remaining part (stair nosing with tread) is used for the top step of the staircase. When installing an adjacent floorcovering - e.g. landings - please
use only the stair nosing without the tread. This avoids differences
in colour. The cut should be made along the groove at the top of the
stair nosing.
For reasons of overall optical impression, the stop heights are selected so as to ensure that norament® without trimmed round pastilles is put against the nosing section, i.e. the stop height of the nosing section has to match the thickness of norament® minus the pastille height.
If a connection between the nosing section and norament® with round trimmed pastilles cannot be avoided, it is only possible to achieve a level connection up to a total thickness of 5.0 mm. If thicker norament® is used, there may be a mismatch in height.
This mismatch can be compensated for by sealing the joint concerned with nora® TH two-component joint sealing compound.
Proper cutting of norament® stairtreads
-
Position stairtread to fit to one stair side (e.g. banister
side). Mark a line at the bottom of the stairtread edge
and at the riser element (figure 1).
 Figure 1
-
Displace stairtread and position to the opposite side
(e.g. wall side).
-
Measure the difference between the two lines with compasses (nora® tool) and adjust the compasses approx. 1.5 mm below the measured value (figure 2).
 Figure 2
-
Check stairtread for exact fit (stair nosing) and mark the dimension with the compasses along the wall (figure 3).
 Figure 3
 Figure 4
-
Cut off excess with the hooked blade (large hook blade),
undercut both sides slightly.
-
Install dry and check for precise fit, then glue on with special dry adhesive off the roll, nora® Stepfix, or suitable contact adhesive.
Attention: On stairtreads equipped with highlight yellow safety strips, the ends of the strips have to be glued additionally with fast-setting adhesive after the cutting of the stairtreads.
Strictly follow the recommendations and processing instructions of the adhesive manufacturers. If in doubt, confirmation must be obtained from the adhesive manufacturer
as to whether the adhesive you want to use is suitable for fixing the flooring in question on the subfloor involved.
-
Contact adhesive
Apply the adhesive with a slightly serrated blade (e.g. TKB A5) to the subfloor and the back of the flooring.
Consumption: approx. 450 g/m²
 TKB A5
Replace worn serrated blades in good time.
Important: The vertical stair nosing section of the stairtread is not fixed.
The grooves at the transition between tread and riser must not be filled with adhesive. Use a brush to apply the adhesive in this area and spread the grooves with adhesive in a longitudinal direction.
Adhesive airing time will depend on the temperature and humidity and can be checked by means of the touch test. The adhesive must still be sticky without being tacky.
The adhesive film will dry faster on the back of rubber floorings than on PVC floorings.
Beginning with the nosing section, the stairtreads is accurately positioned and pressed down.
The 2 m stairtread in particular must not be bent or folded during fitting so that the vertical nosing section will not be overstretched and thus become wavy. This means that two people are required for fitting.
-
The transition section with grooves on the back (from the tread to the riser) is evenly rolled in and pressed down carefully.
The protruding section of the riser is slightly undercut to
match the step.
-
Immediately after the stairtread has been positioned, it is pressed down and rubbed into place. Once it has been positioned in the adhesive bed, it can no longer be shifted.
-
During the installation and adhesive bonding period the norament® stairtread must be protected against temperature fluctuations (e.g. as a result of direct sunlight).
Wet or damp cleaning may only be carried out after the adhesive has bonded, i.e. after approx. 48 hours.
Special hints:
The connection joints between stairtread and stair angles can be sealed with the nora® TH two-component joint sealing compound.
For joints between stair nosings and floorings, TH joint sealing compound (or for smooth floorings nora® hot welding rod) can be used.
