Installation on undercut / rake back stairs

norament® stair treads are intended for installation on right-angled and straight steps. However, they can be installed on undercut stairs with a maximum angle of up to 80° only.

Processing

  1. Appropriate subfloors:
Stairs made of wood, stone, screed (primed), metal and other hard, stable subfloors.

  2. Preparing the subfloor:
The subfloor must be grease-free, dust-free, and dry as well as smooth and firm. Prime screed (dust-binding) if required. The relevant standards (DIN, OE, SIA, BS etc.) governing the installation of rubber floorings and/or manufacturers' instructions must be complied with in each country respectively involved.

Broken or not right-angled nosings must be rectified and levelled using repair angles (see nora® special tools). Appropriate levelling and/or smoothing compounds should be used for this purpose.

  3. Cutting to size and laying:
Non 90° step angles require the profiles to be adapted prior to installing. This is done by cutting a wedge (V) out to reduce the angle of the profiles. Cutting must be made only from the back of the profiles using a profile cutter. (see nora® special tools). The cuts should be as long as possible while keeping the profile flat on the profile cutters base plate. The removed section is usually 0 -4 mm (depending on the required angle) from the centre of the profile (45°) The two remaining edges should then be adhered together using "super glue", taking care that the finished surface is flush.

  4. When all profiles are prepared, stick them together using "super glue" into sections of 4-6 steps at time. The back of the profiles must be cleaned with solvent or basic cleaner. The sections should then be fixed to the banister and/or wall sides using a suitable contact adhesive.

  5. Place the stair into position on one side of the stairs (e.g. banister side) holding it into position. Make sure that at the side you have a net finish. If required you can scribe-in this edge to ensure a snug fit. Draw a small line at the bottom of the stair tread nosing and through onto the riser. Move the stair tread and place it on to the opposite side (e.g. wall side). Read the difference between the two lines by means of dividers, and reduce the gap in the dividers by approx. 1.5 mm and tighten. Check the stair tread is still in the correct position (tight at the stair nosing) and scribe along the wall by means of the dividers. The excess is then removed using a suitable knife. It is important to "undercut" both sides slightly.

  6. Lay the stair tread pre-cut to size, flat onto its back, and press the stair nosing to the stair tread by walking on it. The stair tread should then be inserted in a dry state and checked for correct size and shape. Fully adhere the stair treads by means of the roll-type special dry adhesive tape "nora® stepfix", or with an appropriate contact adhesive.

  7. Start installing the norament® stairtread on the lowest step. To do so, the riser of a stair tread is cut off, and adapted to the riser of the lowest step, glued and cut off flush with the step edge. The remaining section (nosing with tread) is to be used for the highest step of the stair flight. In this case, the tread section is separated in the cushioned edge after the stair nosing.
